Borough officials have approved a project designed to make four intersections on Fair Lawn Avenue safer for pedestrians.

The effort will involve the construction of bump-outs — extensions of sidewalk curbing at crosswalks — at a cost of $511,850 with a grant from the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority.

The bump-outs will be constructed where Fair Lawn Avenue intersects with Abbott Road, Radburn Road, Parmelee Avenue and George Street, Mayor John Cosgrove said. They will shorten the distance that pedestrians have to cross the street at these intersections, while preventing cars from trying to drive around them, Cosgrove said. Work will begin by the end of this year or the beginning of next year, weather permitting.

The borough is still waiting for state engineers to move forward with a similar bump-out project along Broadway. The project had been approved by the state a couple of years ago but has been held up in the review stage, Cosgrove said.
